What It Looks Like When Computers Dream of Porn [NSFW]

By now, you’ve probably heard of Google’s artificial neural network that’s capable of having daydreams reminiscent of your worst acid trip. Of course, the internet masses took this opportunity to create some very NSFW AI porn using the DeepDream code.

So, what does robot porn look like? A MC Escher nightmare coupled with dog memes. Why?

We train an artificial neural network by showing it millions of training examples and gradually adjusting the network parameters until it gives the classifications we want. The network typically consists of 10-30 stacked layers of artificial neurons. Each image is fed into the input layer, which then talks to the next layer, until eventually the “output” layer is reached. The network’s “answer” comes from this final output layer…. This creates a feedback loop: if a cloud looks a little bit like a bird, the network will make it look more like a bird. This in turn will make the network recognize the bird even more strongly on the next pass and so forth, until a highly detailed bird appears, seemingly out of nowhere.

You can get more insight on Google’s Research Blog, but the gist is that the feedback loop either exaggerates or targets features within an image. The result is something Google coins “Inceptionism” — when the artificial neural network searches for meaning within an image.

Ok, enough about that, and on to the good stuff. Thanks internet.
