This iPhone App Teaches Women How to Masturbate

In a 2010 survey, 75 percent of 16 to 17 -year-old-boys masturbated in the past year, compared to only 45 percent of girls. Apparently, it takes another decade for women to catch up, with that number rising to 72 percent for females aged 25 to 29. However, the men in the same age group were still ahead at 84 percent.

So, why the disparity? Note, that survey was taken four years ago and considerable social change has happened since then. Media outlets are emboldened to show more images of women masturbating on screen, such as Lena Dunham’s Girls, and the importance of feeling comfortable in your own skin is something we’re constantly reminded about via whimsical Twitter quotes and Facebook updates. Still, we can’t doubt that the notion of female masturbation is still cloudy to both men and women — with when, where and how a mystery to many.

This is the dilemma Tina Gong, the creator behind HappyPlayTime, seeks to solve. Hoping to encourage women of all ages to explore their bodies, the mobile game teaches users how to masturbate. Interaction with the app takes place via touchscreen and users learn a variety of techniques by making the mascot — a pink, vuvla-shaped character — reach an orgasm.

Of course, what sparked the initial concept was personal experience. Adolescence wasn’t exactly kind to me in terms of figuring that part out about myself. And when I expressed interest to my peers, depending on the people, there was this initial reaction of horror and nausea that I really wasn’t anticipating — even when we were in our early twenties,” Gong told Nextshark.

Despite these initial reactions, Gong continued to press the issue, leading to her current HappyPlayTime startup. As the game undergoes its final stages, she notes that a “big part of the app is also not just teaching, but also generating ideas about other ways to explore” and aims to promote this through a “user-generated database.”

How this virtual game will translate over to reality will be a challenge in itself.

HappyPlayTime recently launched a crowdfund campaign and you can learn more about it here.
