Sweden Renames Female Masturbation as ‘Glitter Clit’

Swedish dictionary, please welcome “glitter clit.” No, that’s not the name of a really bizarrely-premised porn (well, it might be, Rule 34 and all), but rather the English translation of Sweden’s sparkly new term for female masturbation: Klittra.

The Huffington Post announced the Swedish amalgam of clitoris (klitoris) and glitter (glittra) last week. The new term is borne out of a sex-positive competition launched last year by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU). In an effort to start a public dialogue about female sexual health (part of that being masturbation), RFSU held an open call for suggested terms. According to Swedish publication The Local, they received over 200 unique word suggestions, including “pulla” and “runka.” (Swedes of the Internet, do you mind translating?)

RFSU spokeswoman Kristina Ljungros told The Local, “We are trying to put sexuality on the agenda – the positive aspects, not just the negative ones like sexual abuse. We want to focus on the good parts, the lust.”

“When it comes to masturbation, people mostly think about just men doing it and we don’t think of it as common for women. If we don’t have a word in the language, how can we even talk about it?” she added. RFSU is currently pushing to include “Klittra” in the Swedish dictionary.

Beyond rebranding female masturbation, RFSU seems to do a lot of important international work, including advocating for contraception and abortion access globally, promoting comprehensive sex education, fighting the HIV and AIDS epidemic and barring discrimination of LGBTQ persons. Meanwhile, America has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country and only 22 of the 50 states (plus Washington D.C.) mandate sex education. Come on, America: Glitter clits and sex education for everyone!
