We keep saying we’re going to take steps forward, but from here, it looks like we’re back to where we started.
Jennifer Ann Whalen, 39, of Washingtonville, was sentenced up to 18 months in prison for providing her teenage daughter with abortion pills to end her unwanted pregnancy.
The Pennsylvania woman, a single mother who works as an aide in a nursing home, plead guilty to obtaining the pills from a European site for her 16-year-old daughter. Whalen reportedly told authorities that her daughter did not have health insurance to cover the costs of a hospital abortion and that there were no local abortion clinics available — the closest one being 74 miles away in Harrisburg.
When her daughter took the pills, she was rushed to the hospital after experiencing severe cramping and bleeding.
Whalen was sentenced on Friday to serve 12 to 18 months in prison, fined $1000 and ordered to complete 40 hours of community service after her release for violating the state’s law that abortions be performed only by physicians, Reuters reports.
An unfortunate reality that makes it clear eliminating legal abortion options doesn’t stop abortions. It stops access to regulated abortions that are safe.
