Those who got a chance to attend the 2014 Billboard Music Awards got the most unexpected performance of the year: the King of Pop returned to the stage as a hologram, nearly five years after the artist’s death.
Michael Jackson materialized sitting in a golden throne. As he stepped away from the backdrop and moved closer to the crowd, his hologram was joined by both real and artificial backup dancers. He moonwalked through flames as he sang “Slave to the Rhythm,” a song from Jackson’s posthumous Xscape album. The effect was both ethereal and surreal.
It’s been two years since Tupac’s hologram graced Coachella’s stage, causing stoners at the festival to rub their eyes for a double take. MJ’s lifelike return adds to the growing list of resurrected celebrities taking to the stage, a curious nod towards the music industry’s ability to profit off an artist’s legacy long after they’re gone.
