The Kills – What A Rockstar Orgy Looks Like

The-Kills-No-Wow

The Kills played an 80-minute set at the Observatory in Santa Ana last Thursday, but it only took the opening “No Wow” to convert me into a fan.

Which is saying something, because after waiting until 9:45 PM and tapping my fingers through the Black Bananas, I didn’t feel super forgiving. I nearly lost my shit when The Kills followed with “The Future Starts Slow,” the distinctive theme song to the current Sigourney Weaver Political Animals drama on USA.

Alison Mosshart is one fierce performer, nay, a crooning demon possessed by lo-fi rock. As many know, Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie Hince  share a tangible chemistry and it’s a definite crowd boner when they reach close proximity on stage, mouths almost touching as they share the mic. The same can be said for when the waiflike Mosshart teeters on the edge of the stage and stares straight down into your soul.

It was a non-stop whirlwind of a performance as they transitioned from song to song, without speaking to the audience. They exited with “Pots and Pans” and then returned for a haunting rendition of “The Last Goodbye” for the encore. The duo was every bit as mysterious to me when they stopped playing as when they started — it’s clear they’ve maintained their elusive, we’re-just-here-for-the-music-not-to-chat mentality. And respectably so.

It’s not the old days of their old drum machine, though. Did I mention that there were four drummers that night masked in bandanas and smoke, playing in perfect unison on four kits for the entirety of the show? The room was pulsating as if we were all preparing for battle.

Note: Whoever designed the set gets my forever love and congratulations for the leopard print backdrop and brilliant use of mesmerizing strobe lights.

In conclusion, I went to the show having heard none of The Kills and now, they’re all I’ve been listening to for days. They killed it. It hurt me a little to write that.
