I once went through a month where the only music I played in my car was either of the two Mumford and Sons’ albums. In a car ride with my dad, he asked me in full sincerity why I kept playing one song on repeat. Despite knowing every word to every song on both albums, I can’t distinguish more than a couple by name. It’s all a blur of bluegrass strumming and Marcus Mumford’s alternating between mumbling and shouting with sexy gruffness.
It’s an effect Youtuber Dion Beary has called out in his video “Every Mumford and Sons Song Basically.” Beary strums a guitar in the characteristic tune, sings something about loving a girl in varying octaves, and throws in a surprise shout just when you thought the song was over. All he’s missing is the band’s signature head banging to their acoustic guitars and banjos.
