While most of our readers appreciate the warm aroma of a great toke, patrons purchasing Hermès’ iconic Birkin bags are returning the purses due to a lingering marijuana odor.
The debacle began at PurseForum when customers reported a “skunk” smell emanating from their leather bags after being left in the sun for just a few minutes — the heat coaxing out the unusual aroma.
The sticky situation poses a serious problem to the lux brand. The affected bags don’t come cheap. Just one can run you anywhere between $5K to $20K each and gets distributed to boutiques around the world. PageSix reports that the malfunctioning bags will have to be sent to Paris, the weed-smelling leather panels removed and replaced. A source tells PageSix:
Owners are returning the Hermès bags back to boutiques across the US, including the Madison Avenue store, saying they smell of skunk. The bags are being sent back to Paris as nobody knows quite how to deal with this embarrassing situation.
And to think, people pay good money for that delicious stench.
