Serious researchers at New York University set out to answer the golden question: Is drunk sex or high sex better? Is one worse than the other?
The study, led by NYU medical professor Joseph Palamar, analyzed in-depth interviews with 24 heterosexual adults (from ages 18 to 25) about past sexual experiences while under the influence of alcohol or marijuana. While both can influence your physical and mental state (shedding inhibitions, for instance), weed came out as the better choice for your sex life.
The July issue of the Journal Archives of Sexual Behavior read:
Since the landscape is changing, and marijuana continues to increase in popularity, research is needed to continue to examine if and how marijuana use may influence risk for unsafe sexual behavior
Here are the key observations from the study:
1. You’re More Likely to Regret Drunk Sex
Weed’s classic side affect — paranoia — made those interviewed more selective about who they hooked up with. On the other hand, “alcohol was more likely than marijuana to lead to atypical partner choice or post-sex regret.” Drinking was also “often associated with hasty decisions; for example, not using a condom.”
I want to cook the person something to eat (after sex) when I’m high,” one male participant said. “When I’m drunk, it’s like, ‘I’m out of here.’ Or get away from me.
This may partly be because drunk sex increases the likelihood of sleeping with a stranger. And since we tend to smoke pot with friends and/or people we already know, high hookups tend to be more intimate.
2. Yes, Beer Goggles Exist
“With weed I know who I’m waking up with. With drinking, you don’t know. Once you start drinking, everybody looks good,” a a female respondent said.
Both men and women tended to agree that drinking alcohol resulted in lowering their standards when it came to choosing a partner based on appearance and personality.
3. High Sex Feels Better
The study found that both men and women said marijuana gave them longer, more intense orgasms. One 32-year-old woman reported that hers were “magnified at least by five times.”
And while “alcohol tended to numb sensations,” smoking pot “tended to enhance sensations.”
“Alcohol tends to be a lot more numb,” a male participant said. “Everything is sort of blunted and muted, whereas with marijuana it’s intensified.”
4. Depending on the Strain of Weed, High Sex Makes You More Creative in Bed
While both drunk and high sex can lead to trying more things, alcohol was more likely to be associated with aggressive behavior and weed had a more mental affect in bed.
At worst, respondents were more “distracted” when high. A female interviewee said, “You’re so high… you start thinking sex is weird. ‘What is sex?'”
The type of marijuana strain also had a strong affect on a person’s mood between the sheets. “I smoked some Blue Cheese and…I was licking ass, doing all kinds of crazy stuff I had never even thought of,” said one 35-year-old male respondent.”
Note: While the group’s research was not intended to promote smoking marijuana, it’s findings were intended to help “guide potential users to make safer choices.”
