This past weekend, an automated marijuana vending machine debuted in Eagle-Vail, Colorado. Dubbed the ‘ZaZZZ’ by maker American Green, the machine will enable patrons to directly purchase pot and weed-infused snacks, skipping formalities with the middle man.
This direct access sets the new machine apart from older models such as California’s Medbox, which can only be accessed by budtenders from behind the counter and detracts from the giddy I-just-picked-up-from-a-giant-robot-box feeling.
However, if you’re imagining a converted soda machine stocked with marijuana on a street corner, we’re not quite there yet. At the moment, the ZaZZZ can only be accessed by medical marijuana patients and will be located in licensed stores. Using biometrics to verify age, the climate-controlled boxes will serve as a sort of automated checkout line at the grocery, Stephen Shearin, COO of American Green parent Tranzbyte, told Cannabist.
The first direct-access pot machine will be installed inside dispensary Herbal Elements a week before 4/20, of course, on April 13. “We’re looking forward to using the ZAZZ machine to easily track all this inventory,” Greg Honan of Herbal Elements told KDVR. “There’s no room for theft by patients, employees … there’s no way to lose track of the inventory.”
Bottomline: we don’t recommend trying to”shake loose” any items on these ones.
