Over the past few years, Irvine has been inundated with sister locations of well-known Asian restaurants, most of whose headquarters are located in Rowland Heights or the surrounding area. Class 302 is the latest such addition to Irvine, but far from the best. Word on the (meticulously clean) streets of Irvine was that the food was fantastic, but the service was some of the worst in the county, however our experience was quite the opposite.
Class 302 is a Taiwanese restaurant that commits 1hunnit to their classroom theme. A giant chalkboard covers an entire wall, wooden school desks replace your average dining tables, and waiters and waitresses are decked out in kitschy school uniforms. The food consists of mainly fast/casual items: soups, noodles, rice dishes, milk teas, and shaved snow. To get a better idea of the quality of their range of dishes, we ordered a large assortment of things: Bacon Fried Rice, Taiwanese Hot Dog, Ground Pork & Rice, Sweet Potato Fries, Garlic Chicken Teppan, Pork Chop Rice, and Strawberry Shaved Snow.
Everything was…mostly terrible.
Minus the Bacon Fried Rice, which was actually pretty good — despite the bacon having the texture of cardboard. Don’t order the Taiwanese Hot Dog; the rice patty base was overly sweet and the hot dog wasn’t properly heated through. The Ground Pork & Rice came with an “interesting” fur-like shredded pork on the side that ruined any appetite you had for the beautifully-battered sweet potato fries. Our (very large) teppan came out sizzling with the chicken as well as some assorted vegetables and a fried egg, but the chicken was mostly fat and gristle, leaving much to be desired. The Pork Chop Rice came in a nice little tin lunch box, but the breading on the pork was soggy, with the actual pork being way too tough to chew through. Thankfully, the snow here wasn’t bad, and the accompanying pieces of mochi were a nice touch, complementing the sweetness of the fruit fairly well. Although, I’ve had better. (That’s what she said.)
Although the food was a nightmare, the service was fairly decent. We may have had to get their attention for things we needed, but they were very quick and responsive. I will give them credit for providing one of the funniest moments of my year so far. As we enjoyed our shaved snow outdoors, we noticed that their hours stated they close at 12am (with last call at 11:45pm). At 11:30pm, however, the manager proceeded to lock the door WITH CUSTOMERS STILL INSIDE! Thus we were treated to a continuous show of customers trying to leave this fire hazard, only to find their only exit blocked, the look of fear and confusion on their faces filling us with glee (yes, we are the worst).
Terrible food, middling service, and questionable management notwithstanding, you could still give Class 302 a shot, but if it’s a late night snack you’re craving, I would definitely recommend taking it to go.
